Pro News-ing

I was recently chatting with my old buddy Dan and he asked if I ever followed Professional Wrestling. He was asking because of the recent passing of Capt. Lou Albano, who managed many of the famous bad guy wrestlers back in the day. Although some of you may know him better as Cindi Lauper’s dad from the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun video. Anyway, being a young boy in the 70’s, of course I followed Wrestling, a tidbit that seemed to somewhat horrify my Kim. I wasn’t a rabid fan or anything, but I knew a Camel Clutch from a Sleeper Hold, and even went to a Halloween party once as Sgt. Slaughter. One time I even touched Andre the Giant as he was heading into the arena at a local bout. Man is he big… and that night, covered in a slimy sweat. Yum! But it was all in good fun.

It’s not like I ever thought it was anything more than entertainment, but those guys did put on a great show. Every character was exaggerated to the edge of credulity. Good guys were good, bad guys were bad, and there was no middle ground. It was a sensationalized spectacle on steroids. Yet still, I knew several people who were convinced it was a dead serious sport.

The conversation with Dan drifted as they do sometimes, and eventually we started talking about politics, or more specifically the coverage of it. We were discussing how it’s so important to actually analyze what you hear from any source, because nearly all news coverage has a bias. And that led inevitably to stories of some of the outrageous bias and outright falsehoods perpetrated by the “Fair & Balanced” network. And all of a sudden we looked at each other and simultaneously arrived at the same realization:

Fox is the Pro Wrestling of Network News

The universe makes so much more sense this morning.
