{"id":4471,"date":"2012-06-04T16:29:16","date_gmt":"2012-06-04T20:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/?p=4471"},"modified":"2012-06-04T16:29:16","modified_gmt":"2012-06-04T20:29:16","slug":"the-gop-hostage-situation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/2012\/06\/the-gop-hostage-situation.html","title":{"rendered":"The GOP Hostage Situation"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2294\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2294\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/2010\/08\/romney-offers-economic-policy-with-meat.html\/mitt_romney_2006\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2294\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2294\" title=\"Mitt_Romney,_2006\" src=\"http:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Mitt_Romney_2006-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mitt_Romney,_2006\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Mitt_Romney_2006-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Mitt_Romney_2006.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Parachutegurl, cropped by Gridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ezra Klein makes the <a title=\"The Keynesian case for Romney\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/ezra-klein\/post\/the-keynesian-case-for-romney\/2012\/06\/04\/gJQAIETuDV_blog.html?wprss=rss_ezra-klein\" target=\"_blank\">somewhat disturbing argument<\/a> that even if you disagree with every one of Mitt Romney\u2019s policies, there\u2019s a chance he\u2019s still the best candidate to lift the economy in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The essential thesis is that what Romney will do in the short term isn&#8217;t much different than what Obama has already proposed.\u00a0 However, Obama is being stonewalled by the GOP controlled House, and it is unlikely the Democrats will retake the House even if Obama is reelected.\u00a0 Meanwhile, it&#8217;s very likely that a Romney win will be accompanied by Republicans retaining the House and very possibly getting a Senate majority to boot.\u00a0 The reasonable bet is that the GOP would rally around policies offered by a Republican President, while they would continue the blockade against substantively those same policies when offered by Obama.<\/p>\n<p>What Klein seems to be trying hard not to say is that the GOP is holding the economy hostage right now.\u00a0 Elect Romney and they&#8217;ll let it live.\u00a0 Reelect Obama, and they&#8217;ll let it fall off the looming fiscal cliff.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s disturbing is, I don&#8217;t think Klein is wrong.\u00a0 Still the notion of rewarding the GOP for this sort of behavior remains unthinkable.\u00a0 As much as I want the economy to recover, I cannot and will not support the sort of politics that says either I&#8217;m winning or I will exist to destroy you.\u00a0 The Republicans need to be taught a lesson here.\u00a0 They need to know that there are times they will be in the majority and times they will not be.\u00a0 But in all those cases, we the people expect them to do their goddamned jobs and work in our best interests.<\/p>\n<p>The only way that lesson is learned is if the GOP gets severely spanked in 2012 at the state and federal levels.\u00a0 Yes, the time may come some years down the road when the Dems need to be similarly spanked, but that is not the case now.\u00a0 All things are not equal. Yes, there is still too much special interest money in politics. Yes, there are problems with the Fed, the banking industry, the filibuster, and other intractable issues.\u00a0 But none of that changes the elemental reality that one of the parties is currently holding the system hostage until it is put back in power.\u00a0 This is something we can fix. Now. And easily.<\/p>\n<p>And just maybe, should we succeed in giving the Democrats control of the government, they can enact the same economy saving short term policies without rewarding the GOP for putting a gun to our heads.\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t that be just a little satisfying?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The GOP is holding the economy hostage right now.
