{"id":3680,"date":"2011-07-29T11:11:37","date_gmt":"2011-07-29T15:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/?p=3680"},"modified":"2011-07-29T11:11:37","modified_gmt":"2011-07-29T15:11:37","slug":"the-budget-problems-are-all-healthcare-related","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/2011\/07\/the-budget-problems-are-all-healthcare-related.html","title":{"rendered":"The budget problems are all healthcare related"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/2011\/07\/the-budget-problems-are-all-healthcare-related.html\/fixit\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3681\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3681\" title=\"FixIt\" src=\"http:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/FixIt-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fix It\" width=\"270\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/FixIt-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/FixIt-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/FixIt.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a>Healthcare spending in the U.S. accounts for 17.6% of the economy, and is <a title=\"US health bill to approach 20 pct of spend by 2020\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/07\/28\/health-spending-idUSN1E76Q19P20110728\" target=\"_blank\">projected to be 20% by the end of this decade<\/a>.\u00a0 These are not federal budget numbers, this is the whole economy.\u00a0 $1 out of every $6 that&#8217;s spent in this country is spent on healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>For context, that&#8217;s <a title=\"Comparing U.S. Healthcare Spending with Other OECD Countries \" href=\"http:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/146992-comparing-u-s-healthcare-spending-with-other-oecd-countries\" target=\"_blank\">double the percentage<\/a> spent in the average OCED country.\u00a0 In absolute dollars, we spend 2.5 times more per capita than average, at $8,650\/person.\u00a0 And for all that money, <a title=\"US Spends Most on Health Care; Results Lag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2009\/12\/08\/health\/main5939340.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">we rank just under the average<\/a> for life expectancy and infant mortality.<\/p>\n<p>This is a pointless drag on the entire economy.\u00a0 Not only for the government and private employers, but for workers as well.\u00a0 One of the reasons wages have been so flat for the last decade is that money available for employee raises has gone into preserving medical coverage rather than increasing take home pay.<\/p>\n<p>Yet this is also a big issue, <em>perhaps the only issue<\/em>, for the current budget problems faced by the federal government.\u00a0 <a title=\"Uncle Sam to Pay More of the Tab for Health \" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424053111903635604576472411389580364.html\" target=\"_blank\">Government spending on healthcare<\/a> (including employee plans, veterans benefits, as well as Medicare and Medicaid) is $1.17 trillion each year.\u00a0 And this is projected to double over the decade.\u00a0 Granted, these numbers are inclusive of state and local government spending as well, but this is still paid for with our tax dollars.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, considering our 2.5x cost premium, there&#8217;s $700 billion\/year sitting on the table if we manage to get our healthcare costs in line with our global peers.\u00a0 Even assuming the federal portion is only half of that, the numbers dwarf any of the cost savings currently proposed by either party&#8217;s budget plans.\u00a0 Couple this with the already planned savings for drawing down the wars, and our deficit goes away by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>This is the only budget problem we need to be addressing.\u00a0 It saves Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, NASA, Pell Grants, and everyone else currently on the chopping block.\u00a0 Do the math.<\/p>\n<p>So why aren&#8217;t we focused on fixing this?\u00a0 Primarily because the proven method of achieving the healthcare cost goals, the one used by pretty much every other OCED country we are benchmarking against, is some form of single-payer model.\u00a0 And for reasons known mostly to powerful corporate lobbies for insurance, pharmaceutical, and medical device\u00a0 companies, single-payer health plans are socialist Nazi plots to kill Grandma. Instead, we are committed to responsible prudent austerity founded on shared sacrifice&#8230; because Grandma prefers be bankrupt such that she is forced to choose between food and medicine.\u00a0 After all, it is about having a choice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Considering our 2.5x cost premium, there&#8217;s $700 billion\/year sitting on the table if we manage to get our healthcare costs in line with our global peers.
