{"id":2866,"date":"2010-11-23T11:14:04","date_gmt":"2010-11-23T16:14:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/?p=2866"},"modified":"2010-11-24T09:48:23","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T14:48:23","slug":"shimkus-on-the-genesis-of-global-warming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/2010\/11\/shimkus-on-the-genesis-of-global-warming.html","title":{"rendered":"Shimkus on the genesis of global warming"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2869\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2869\" href=\"http:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/2010\/11\/shimkus-on-the-genesis-of-global-warming.html\/neworleansflood\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2869 \" title=\"NewOrleansFlood\" src=\"http:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/NewOrleansFlood.jpg\" alt=\"New Orleans Flood\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Don&#39;t sweat the coming flood, there&#39;ll be fresh veggies in Greenland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Illinois Republican John Shimkus is vying to be the head of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce when the new Congress convenes in 2011.\u00a0 This committee is one of the oldest in existence, and plays a central role in the formulation of energy policy.\u00a0 It would also be the genesis of any carbon or climate based legislation.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sorry, did I say genesis?\u00a0 No, a Shimkus led Energy and Commerce Committee would be the genesis of no such thing.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because of Genesis, as in the Book of.\u00a0 Shimkus recently quoted Genesis 8:22 on the House floor, \u201cAs long as the earth endures, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, will never cease.\u201d\u00a0 He cites the passage as proof that we needn&#8217;t worry about this whole silly global warming thing because God says He won&#8217;t let us destroy the planet.\u00a0 It&#8217;ll be over when <em>He <\/em>says it&#8217;s over, and not before.\u00a0 (Charles Jaco, of KTVI in St.Louis <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fox2now.com\/videobeta\/5068b1a8-6827-4976-8f2d-f703d1b3b7fa\/News\/Jaco-Report-Rep-John-Shimkus-R-IL-On-Climate-Change\" target=\"_blank\">covers the story in a video clip<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Yet Shimkus doesn&#8217;t stop there.\u00a0 He explains that the notion of puny  little mankind impacting something like the global climate is strictly  arrogance on our part.\u00a0 Sure, the climate&#8217;s changing, but we didn&#8217;t do  it, can&#8217;t stop it, and frankly should just embrace it\u2014go with the flow,  so to speak.\u00a0 He goes on to tout the upside to global warming.\u00a0 Sure, New Orleans and NYC will be underwater, but hey, vegetable gardens in Greenland!<\/p>\n<p>Where was this line of reasoning during the cold war?\u00a0 We&#8217;d have saved billions of dollars and countless man-years of worry and angst if only we&#8217;d realized global nuclear annihilation would be prevented by God instead of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction).\u00a0 And think of all the money wasted on smokestack scrubbers to abate the northeast&#8217;s acid rain in the 70&#8217;s.\u00a0 If only we&#8217;d have been patient, God would have set it right for us.<\/p>\n<p>God&#8217;s fine with us being irresponsible.\u00a0 He kind of expects it.\u00a0 After that whole Eve and the snake debacle He learned that having given us free will meant he was going to spend eternity chasing us around with a galactic size roll of supernaturally absorbent Bounty towels to clean up our messes.\u00a0 So, you know&#8230; no worries.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Shimkus is fully aware he&#8217;s using the bible as a lever to carry out the objectives of the big oil lobby.\u00a0 Maybe he&#8217;s dumber than a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BNeEVkhTutY\" target=\"_blank\">starving polar bear<\/a> who walks 1000 miles to hug a man in his driveway and fails to think, &#8220;(sniff, sniff) Hmmm&#8230; smells like lunch.&#8221;\u00a0 Either way, let&#8217;s not put this guy in charge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shimkus touts the upside to global warming.
