{"id":1738,"date":"2010-04-14T07:12:08","date_gmt":"2010-04-14T11:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nicholsclan.com\/tinblog\/?p=1738"},"modified":"2010-04-12T18:39:39","modified_gmt":"2010-04-12T22:39:39","slug":"ditto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timscogitorium.com\/tinblog\/2010\/04\/ditto.html","title":{"rendered":"Ditto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s episode of The Big Bang Theory included a scene where Leonard said, &#8220;I love you&#8221; to Penny.\u00a0 And she responded with those words everyone wants to hear, &#8220;Thank you.&#8221;\u00a0 On the one hand, I was a little surprised to learn I was in possession of some old fashioned values.\u00a0 After all, it seemed to me that such expressions of emotion usually came before all the schtupping.\u00a0\u00a0 But what do I know?\u00a0 Kids these days&#8230; and get off my lawn!!<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the larger point was that it got me to thinking about what good responses to &#8220;I love you&#8221; might be.\u00a0 There&#8217;s the tried and true, &#8220;I love you too.&#8221;\u00a0 But that seems almost perfunctory.\u00a0 Maybe not during the initial saying, but year after year, it can seem like you&#8217;re not really trying.\u00a0 Sometimes I&#8217;ll try and dress it up by responding with something like, &#8220;And I you.&#8221;\u00a0 It gets beyond the trite,but borders on the pretentious, which may not really help.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.ce.cn\/entertainment\/movie\/200803\/06\/W020080306399052372464.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Swayze\" src=\"http:\/\/en.ce.cn\/entertainment\/movie\/200803\/06\/W020080306399052372464.jpg\" alt=\"Swayze\" width=\"230\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a>The other day, Kim responded to me with, &#8220;I know.&#8221;\u00a0 Now had this been a first time exchange, that might have been as bad as &#8220;Thank you.&#8221;\u00a0 However, after all these years, I think it&#8217;s a great response.\u00a0 If she can still tell, then I must be doing something right.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re Patrick Swayze, you can get away with saying &#8220;Ditto.&#8221;\u00a0 For anyone else, this comes across as less imaginative than, &#8220;I love you too.&#8221;\u00a0 Further, it reminds her that you are not Patrick Swayze, and that is not helping your case.<\/p>\n<p>And in the event you&#8217;re inclined to counter that she&#8217;s no Demi Moore either, well, just don&#8217;t.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/show\/79229\">First rule of holes<\/a> and all.\u00a0 You might has well have responded, &#8220;That&#8217;s nice Honey. Now can you move?
