It looked for awhile like saner heads would prevail, but no. Congress just approved delaying the DTV transition until June. After all, 5% of the households aren’t ready, and their TVs might not work. I’m curious what will happen in June when 4% of the households still are not ready.
But the larger issue here is the reality that our government seems incapable of stopping anything once it has started it. We wonder why the government is bloated, but any program, once in place, must go on until every last voter is done using it for fear that someone will walk into a voting booth and pull the other guy’s lever out of vengeance for a politician having taken something away.
Obama was supposed to be different. He was supposed to be able to make the hard choices. To convince people that sacrifice was essential for the greater good—for the good of our future. Yet he’s the one that started this delay of DTV for fear that some of us would miss Oprah for a few days. If he won’t risk the ire of 5% of the population with regard to their TVs, will he seriously ever be able to get health care reform implemented? I’ve certainly not given up on him, but I am disappointed.
