Today marks my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. That feat in and of itself is amazing. The fact that they both remain healthy and active and are able to enjoy the day makes it all the more sweet.
Yet the really incredible part to me is that they have set such an example of what a successful marriage should be. I’m sure they’ve had their difficulties. I’m not naive. But through it all they’ve remained friends. For as far back as I can remember, they have genuinely liked each other. They support each other. And they seem to honestly appreciate the different strengths each of them brings to the table. That’s rare. Not just rare in today’s world of 50% divorce rates. Not just rare in my limited experience. But I think it’s truly rare in this world for two people to have forged a long life together where their partnership exceeds their individual selves.
I’m proud of them… and wish them many more years together.
