Proving that not all science is worthwhile science, Georg Steinhauser, a Vienna chemist has discovered that the scaly structure of hairs around the navel are primarily responsible for scraping all that lint off of your clothes and directing it toward your bellybutton. This conclusion was reached after 3 years of contemplating his own navel, where he collected over 500 lint samples for study and analysis.

Steinhauser goes further out on a limb by stating that bellybutton lint is primarily an affliction of adult males. This coincides nicely with his observations as the number of women with hirsute navels are gratefully small.
